Classes 20, 25, 31, 37, 40, 45, 46, 47, 55, 56, 85 and 87 in BR service during the early 1980s. Also, Deltics in preservation up to 1988.

5th January 1981:
1a) - 31184 arrives at Nuneaton on a Birmingham service at 1110hrs.
1b) - As 85018 arrives on ECS, 31184 sets off.
2 - At Nuneaton, 25125 is heard shunting in the background, and then 25208 heads through southbound on an empty goods train.
3 - 47438 departs Crewe for Holyhead.
Nuneaton 21st February 1981:
4 - 87101 tears through northwards.
Grantham:
5a)* - 55009 departs on the 0940 Kings Cross-Edinburgh (24th July 81).
5b)* - A short while later, 55009 enters Peascliffe Tunnel and passes 55018 on a service from Hull (24th July 81).
6 - 55008 departs on a down service, on the afternoon of 25th July 1981. (See front cover photo).
5th August 1981:
7 - 20075/070 depart platform 1, Leicester, for Skegness. Then 20159/193 pass through southwards on the goods line.
8(1) - 55016 departs platform 4, Peterborough, at 1511hrs.
Peterborough:
9 - 56060 pulls away (north at 1046hrs) on a fly-ash train. 31st Aug. 81.
10 - As the wagons of a fly-ash train trundle passed, "skin-head" 31106 departs platform 5 for Birmingham. 26th Sep. 81.
11 - 55019 departs platform 2 at 2011hrs for Kings Cross. 26th Sep. 1981.
12 - 55013 arrives at platform 3 on a York service. 26th September 1981.
13 - 55013 then departs at 1912hrs.
York 21st October 1981:
14 - 55010 departs platform 3 (bay platform) at 1415hrs.
19th December 1981:
15* - With snow lying on the ground, and temperature well below freezing, 31413 failed just east of Stamford on a morning Birmingham to Norwich service. A very poorly 31413 gets moving again. It runs over the detonators laid down for a possible rescue loco.
Peterborough 30th December 1981:
16 - 40092 departs northwards from platform, at 1614 in fading light.
Leicester 29th May 1982:
17 - 20159/186 arrive at platform 2 with the 0850 to Skegness.
18 - 20159/186 then set off on time.
Rotherham 28th March 1983:
19* - 45075 departs at 1827 towards Sheffield.
Doncaster on the night of 19th/20th April 1983:
20 - 47199 sets off from platform 3 at 2308 on parcels.
21 - 40157 passes through southwards on goods. 46014 then departs on a passenger/mail over-night northbound service, and then 40024 (parcels) follows at 0329hrs, to shouts from the many enthusiasts out that night.
22 - 31105 hauling a car-transporter squeals passed, and then an ex-works 47479 departs platform 3 (heading south), at 0349, on ECS (mk.3 sleepers and mk. 1 stock).
Audley End 20th April 1983:
23 - 31261 departs south at 0742 and is heard going off into the distance.
Coalville Open Day 5th June 1983:
24 - 56052 makes a demonstration run with a mixed goods train.
Leicester - June 1983:
25 - Having brought in the ECS for a Leeds service (platform 4), 45051 is uncoupled and runs off light engine at 0755. 2nd June.
26 - 20075/072 arrive on ECS for the Skegness service. 45051 sets off for Leeds at 0801 (behind the mic) as 47239 stands at the head of an excursion to York and Scarborough. 2nd June.
27 - 25095 passes on the goods line, northwards, hauling a mixture of Grainflow and tankers, at 2010hrs. 08692 runs passed light. 9th June.
Nene Valley Railway 7th April 1984:
31 - 9000 with one engine idling, has the 2nd engine started up, shuts down the 1st engine, then runs light out of Wansford station.
Nene Valley Railway 30th April 1988:
32 - At Peterborough NVR, 55016 runs onto its 5 coach train.
33 - 55016 passes a level crossing near Castor at 1750.
June 1983:
34 - 37057 passes Grantham (on Grainflow) at 0045. 21st June 1983.
35 - 45041 on ECS in the early evening, at Sheffield. 21st June 1983.
36 - At Huddersfield, 47420 departs at l256 for Manchester, 23rd June 1983.
37 - At Leeds, 45029 departs platform 9 at 1400hrs. 23rd June 1983.
North Yorkshire Moors Railway:
38*(1) - 55019 departs Grosmont and tackles the 1 in 49. 20th Oct. 1984.
39(1) - At Grosmont 55009 draws empty stock forward. 23rd April 1988.
40* - 55009 and 31428 top and tail a service departing Grosmont at 1509. 23rd April 1988.
Severn Valley Railway 16th October 1988:
41* - 55016 departs Highley northbound at 1345.
9th March 1985:
42* - 25309 departs Leicester at 1500hrs on a Birmingham-Norwich service (after replacing a failed class 31).
43 - 31463 pulls away from platform 4, Peterborough, but then does an emergency stop. It gets on its way again towards Leicester, at 1721.
44 - 37118 passes Peterborough (southwards), platform 4, on tankers.
Peterborough - The night of 22nd/23rd February 1984:
45 - At the south end of Peterborough, platforms 4/5, at 2102hrs. 31414 propels empty coaching stock back a few yards along platform 5, as 45130 passes in the background on a northbound freight. 31412 sets off for Norwich from platform 4. 08324 follows up along platform 4 with some parcels vans. Another 31 departs platform 2 southbound on ECS in the background. Then a rough sounding 31414 sets off (behind the mic) taking the Norwich line.
46 - 40155 passes southwards along platform 4 at 0012hrs, on a motorail. The articulated vehicles provide a distinctive rhythm.
47 - Earlier that night, 47602 departs platform 4 at 2341 (parcels).
Nene Valley Railway - 20th August 1988:
48* - On the final service of the day, 55016 has some lost time to catch up. We depart Yarwell Mill at l700 and pass through the tunnel.
