NOTE: These titles are not available for sale here (except my own titles at the bottom of the page).
This is a listing of all the published audio recordings that I know of, that cover the 1950s to the 1980s of UK diesel (and electric) loco action. I've also included some steam sounds, where publishers have covered different forms of rail traction. This page is for information only, in case you want to track down second-hand copies of these old recordings.
I've added some details for those titles I've listened to, or have publisher's descriptions of.
DECCA/ARGO/TRANSACORD
Peter Handford's Transacord business as a professional film sound recordist, pioneered railway recording for the enthusiast in the 1950s. Although he was capturing the last years of steam for posterity, he also ended up with some very rare diesel sounds going back to 1958. The sound quality is pretty good even by modern standards.
The Decca record company bought up Transacord and Argo (producer of spoken word records), hence the ARGO TRANSACORD record label.
-AT714 (LP) & KAT714 (cassette) "THIS IS YORK"
Featuring steam at York in 1957 and diesels at York in 1977 (plus steam at other locations). Amazingly, there are no Deltic recordings in the 1977 section (it might have been during some industrial action 'grounding' the Deltic fleet?), but there are some pretty good class 46 and 47 sounds. Classes 31, 37 and 40 are included, plus an HST on a crew-training run.
-AT718 (LP) & KCSP 438 (cassette) "CHANGING TRAINS"
Featuring plenty of steam plus a few diesels, noteably a couple of Deltics in 1961; a ride in the rear cab of the prototype HST; a very atmospheric recording of a 40 climbing Shap; a 26 at Hitchin; a superb track of a 47 on the Waverley line where the rhythm of the engine matches that of the coach wheels.
-ZTR145 (LP) "DELTICS"
An Argo/Stavely Makepeace production with recordings by Nigel Fletcher and Rob Woodward. Published in 1976. All the recordings were made during 1975 at a wide range of locations along the ECML. Highlights include: 55001 rushing through Grantham; 55002 climbing Stoke Bank; 55010 departing Berwick. Approx. 60 minutes.
-ZTR141 (LP) "WESTERNS"
An Argo/Stavely Makepeace production with recordings by Nigel Fletcher and Rob Woodward. Published in 1975.
- (CD) "DIESELS THROUGH THE DECADES"
From the archives of Peter Handford, some of the rarest recordings you are ever likely to hear, such as: Prototypes 10201 and 10000/10001; Blue Pullmans; a Baby Deltic running light (albeit with squealing flanges); plenty of Westerns; a Hymek; a floor-shaking double-header Clayton recording.

ALAN VITTY
Steam recordings from 1965 followed by a huge range of diesel recordings from 1976 onwards (including all 22 production Deltics).
